MXL is a trademark of Marshall Electronics. It dominates the pro audio equipment market, particularly the microphone market. One of the most well-liked condenser mics available today is the MXL 770. Does the MXL 770 need phantom power? The MXL, produced at their California headquarters, is a budget-friendly condenser microphone ideal for voice recording, podcasting, and other related tasks in home studios.
Unlike other USB mics we’ve evaluated, this one requires an additional audio interface because it’s an XLR microphone. Does the MXL 770 need phantom power?
It would help if you utilized an interface that offers phantom power to connect a condenser microphone to a computer. The MXL Mic Mate Pro provides phantom power while converting the XLR analog output of a single condenser microphone into a digital signal transferred over USB. Direct input monitoring also provides gain control and a headphone output with volume control. Remember that not all XLR to USB converters offer phantom power, so confirm that yours does before using it. Does the MXL 770 need phantom power?
An interface uses a microphone preamp that delivers phantom power similarly, which may offer more connection, monitoring, and signal routing options. Some interfaces can support up to 8 input channels, which allows for the simultaneous use of numerous microphones. Most interfaces connect to your computer via standard Thunderbolt or USB connectors. Don’t forget to choose your interface in the recording program or computer settings as your input or output device.
Phantom power is not required for USB microphones. The USB connection on your computer will supply enough power for the microphone to charge and function properly. Since everything is included in the microphone, USB microphones do not require an interface.
Typically passive, dynamic microphones don’t have any active circuitry that draws additional power. A dynamic microphone won’t be harmed accidentally using phantom power, but it should be avoided if feasible. Your dynamic microphone might receive phantom power because some mixers or preamps distribute phantom power to groups of channels rather than individual tracks. This shouldn’t raise any red flags.
Phantom power should not be applied to ribbon microphones. While briefly and unintentionally exposing your ribbon mic to 48V may not have any detrimental effects, repeated exposure may cause a ribbon element to strain or even blow altogether. This will significantly reduce the functionality of your microphone. These guidelines do not apply to some active ribbon mics that do need phantom power.
Does the MXL 770 need phantom power? Tube microphones often come with specialized power supplies and need more than 48V to operate. The channel to which your tube microphone is connected does not require phantom power. You require an external 48V power supply if your mixer or interface does not offer phantom power. Once your microphone is powered on, you should utilize an interface or preamp that allows you to manipulate gain to alter the amount of signal it produces.
